The dedicated and skilled team of archaeologists at Mercian Archaeological Services CIC are hoping to get more people in our local community involved in their upcoming work.

Experience Digging Days

Have you, or someone you know, always wanted to have a go at archaeology? Experience the excitement and thrill of digging up artefacts from the past, and connecting with the events and people of times long gone, under the supervision of archaeologists from Mercian.

This is the perfect way to fulfil a life’s ambition and perhaps take the first steps on a fantastic journey into re-discovering people, objects, and places from the past…

Mercian invite you to book on an Experience Digging Day at the King John’s Palace Excavation in Sherwood Forest. Upcoming date are all in April: 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th. This costs £75 per person per day, or a full week for £300 (Monday to Friday). Book at www.mercian-as.co.uk/intro_days.html.

Bursaries available

Mercian now have a bursary scheme too, which they have launched to enable local people to attend who may not otherwise be able to do so.
The scheme is designed to offer funded places to people from within six miles of the site of King John’s Palace. For Sherwood Forest, applications are being judged with help from Vibrant Warsop.

If you would like to apply, you can find out more at www.mercian-as.co.uk/bursaries.html.

They’re also seeking businesses and people who may be willing to sponsor bursaries to enable local people to attend the courses. The price for sponsorship by a business is £450. Find out more at www.mercian-as.co.uk/corporate_sponsorship.html.

Public donations can also be made to support a bursary or bursaries via Mercian’s GoFundMe page: www.gofundme.com/f/sponsored-archaeological-field-school-bursaries.

Sherwood Forest Archaeological Training Field School

This is not an ordinary field school – this is a ‘training field school’ where you will learn about all aspects of archaeological excavation and receive hands on training and learning from archaeological professionals in the heart of Sherwood Forest.

As well as offering the best in archaeological training and support, the Field School is tailored towards enabling attendees to fulfil the requirements of the Archaeological Skills Passport.

Take your skills to the next level by joining the week-long event at King’s Clipstone. Places are still available from 21st to 25th July, 28th July to 1st August and 11th to 15th August. The price is £450 per person, or £350 per student.

Everyone is welcome and no previous knowledge or experience is required. Find out more at www.mercian-as.co.uk/sherwoodforestfieldschool.html.
