Groups such as Dukeries Eco Watch are concerned that recent political changes are influencing changing attitudes to Net Zero and we are now looking at attitudes that are more interested in economic growth than climate change and are abandoning the net zero target.
Plans submitted by the UK Government to reach the net zero target by 2050 were challenged in court by Friends of the Earth. They were found to be inadequate and rejected by the courts.
To limit further warming, we want to see governments:
- Scale up carbon capture and storage Removes carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere and store it underground, to help offset emissions that can’t be fully reduced.
- Investing in renewable energy sources: Aggressively transition to solar, wind, geothermal, and other clean energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- Improving energy efficiency: Implement measures to reduce energy consumption in buildings, transportation, and industrial processes.
- Promoting sustainable agriculture: Practices like agroforestry and reduced tillage can help sequester carbon in the soil.
- Adapting to climate impacts: Invest in infrastructure to protect coastal communities from sea level rise and develop heat-resistant crops.
- Supporting research and development: Continued innovation in clean technologies and carbon removal methods is crucial for long-term climate mitigation.
We, as individuals, can help by lobbying our MPs for the above and taking action to reduce our personal carbon footprints through lifestyle changes like sustainable transportation, responsible consumption, and dietary choices.
We know world leaders can work together when necessary. The Climate and biodiversity crisis is a global emergency that we need to unite to act upon.
