This month, the Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) volunteers have been busy taking turns using the water bowser to keep the flowerbeds and planters well-watered and looking their best. The allotment is thriving; the beef tomatoes are unusually large, and the pumpkins are coming along nicely in preparation for autumn. It has been a month of bumper crops, including beans, peas, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, beetroot, and kale.
Initially, these were offered to volunteers, and a significant amount of fresh produce was also sent to the village Food Hub. Some of the produce even made its way to the local wildlife, including caterpillars and a squirrel that seemed particularly interested in the corn.
On Saturday 17th August there was a gathering at the allotment for volunteers, their families, and friends. Everyone brought food and drink, and with favourable weather, a good time was had by all.
Edwinstowe in Bloom is extremely pleased and proud to announce that it was awarded a Community Champion Award. This recognition honours the partnership work with Academy Transformation Trust Further Education College in engaging students and families with the Bloom initiative throughout the year. The award was collected by Chair Jo Aylwin on behalf of the group.
Earlier in the month, the Robin Hood-themed entries in the Shop Window Competition were truly impressive. The judges had a difficult time selecting the winners. The Shop Front winner was Goffs Butchers, the Shop Window winner was Village Xchange, and the runners-up were The Flower Room, Three Little Daisies, and Robins Den. Additionally, Magenta Trends Ltd was highly commended. All other entries received a participation certificate as a thank you for their support.
The Scarecrow Competition, which took place in September, was judged between 14th and 22nd September. The theme was mining, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Thoresby Colliery. Details of the winner will be included in the next article.
Regarding the EiB Photography Competition, there have been many entries for July and August, with September closing on the last day of the month. The winning entries for these months, along with other previous winners, will be featured in the 2025 Calendar, which will be produced at the end of the year.
