In 2023, 11 new members joined the Edwinstowe Historical Society, but sadly two long-standing members died. It is gratifying to note that visitor numbers have increased, which was apparent when 31 people attended the recent talk, ‘Arbella Stuart – the Queen That Never Was’.
The current display in the Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre depicts wintry scenes in Edwinstowe and Sherwood Forest. For a short period in December Edwinstowe experienced a little taste of the white stuff, but insufficient to produce any works of art similar to those of a member of the Tudsbury family who sculpted snow figures following a snow storm in March 1909.
Requests for help continue to be received regarding ancestors who once lived in the village, but recently the reverse occurred, when information was provided from a gentleman in Canada, relating to George Steeples 14th (King’s) Hussars who died in North West Persia on 16th October 1918. This has now been added to the website.
The next meeting on Wednesday 21st February is entitled ‘A Journey Along the River Maun’. The talk will be a reminder of the industries which flourished along the banks of the Maun, and the grounds and estates through which it flowed.
Meetings are held in the Church Rooms, Mansfield Road, Edwinstowe NG21 9NJ on the third Wednesday of the month, starting at 2.00pm and lasting for approximately two hours. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available.
The annual subscription is £15.00, and visitors are welcome at a charge of £3.00. For more information visit www.edwinstowehistory.org.uk or email EdwinstoweHistorySoc@gmail.com.
