The Arts Society Dukeries’ next lecture is on Wednesday 5th April and will feature speaker Ian Swankie on ‘Railway Stations – Evoking Romance and Adventure’.
Think of Saint Pancras International or New York at Grand Central station. You know they are special places, promising excitement and adventure. But there are dozens of other glorious stations in the UK and abroad.
This lecture will journey around some of the most evocative and splendid stations in the world. It will look not only at the magnificence of the architecture and the brilliant engineering, but also numerous art works within the stations such as Claude Monet’s Gare St Lazard in Paris and William Powell Frith’s Paddington.
The lavish, colourful and fun talk may sound a bit ‘anoraky’, but it isn’t!
The following lecture on Wednesday 3rd May will be ‘The Art of Winnie the Pooh’ by James Campbell.

Monthly lectures take place at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Tea and coffee are available from 10.00am, ready to start by 11.00am and lasting for approximately one hour. Free car parking is available. Members pay an annual subscription; visitors are welcome at a cost of £7.00 per lecture.
