Make the most of life by exploring new ideas, skills and interests with Dukeries u3a.
Dukeries u3a is looking forward to three special events this year. 2022 marks the 30th birthday of the group and celebrations start as part of the members’ Annual General Meeting on 16th May. This will be closely followed by a party celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 4th June. In September, Dukeries u3a will be taking part in the festival week running throughout the country to celebrate the 40th anniversary of u3a in the UK.
All activity and interest groups have started up again and social events are happening. Members had a great social night at the Race Night held in Jubilee Hall; thanks go to Stefan, Colin and David for helping to arrange this and practising their maths skills! A pie and pea supper provided by Borrows Meats completed the evening. The Sunday and Tuesday lunch clubs enjoyed meals at Launay’s and Rose Cottage in Edwinstowe. There is also good news that the Bowling Group will soon be welcomed back at Ollerton Bowling Club. The Ramblers recently walked two colliery trails, starting with the 8-mile Colliery Walk which included the Creswell Crags historic site. This was followed by the 6.5-mile Pleasley Pit Trail. Shorter walks of three to four miles around the Ollerton area continued for the Whatsapp Walkers.
March’s speaker was Simon Cork, who told members about the fascinating life and work of the great philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Serving firefighter Jack Hibbert will visit Dukeries u3a during the April meeting to give advice on home safety specifically tailored to u3a members.
As part of their commitment to engage in the local community, Dukeries u3a members are delighted to be invited to take part in walks firstly by Andy Oxnard, Community Engagement and Development Co-ordinator and secondly by the Friends of Sherwood Heath. Hopefully there will be sunshine at the picnic planned for 8th May at the RSPB site in Edwinstowe.
Congratulations are due to members and to organiser Pam for smashing the £2,000 mark in collecting for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, the members’ nominated charity.
Do you have an interest or skill that you would be happy to share, or would you like to learn and enjoy an activity? Or perhaps you have recently moved to the area and are looking for new friends to safely meet and socialise. Dukeries u3a has a varied calendar of activities and interests, however there is always room for new subjects to be in their programme. You can join online via the website or in person at a monthly members’ meeting, which takes place at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton on the third Monday starting at 1.00pm.
