Dukeries u3a

Make the most of life once you’re no longer in full time work by exploring new ideas, skills and interests with Dukeries u3a.
2022 will be an exciting year as Dukeries u3a is planning events celebrating its 30th birthday, plus the 40th anniversary of u3a being inaugurated in the UK. Founded in 1982, u3a is a UK-wide movement of locally-run interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities for members to come together to learn for fun. Members explore new ideas, skills and activities together. There are 1,057 u3as with over 450,000 members; membership is open to everyone who’s no longer in full-time employment.

Unfortunately, the Christmas party in December had to be postponed and will now take place in February. Monthly meetings and activity groups are continuing when it is safe to do so and there are plans for social events, including a race night and a quiz night. The book group and knitting group have already restarted after their enforced Covid break, and it is hoped that by spring trips will start again.

February’s guest speaker will be Geoff Harris, who will reveal ‘The London No-One Tells You About’. Also in February, Dukeries u3a is planning to publicise itself by participating in the RSPB Sherwood Forest’s Heart Trail, where crafted hearts will form a trail from Edwinstowe village to the RSPB site.

Are you aged over 50 and not in full time employment? Do you have an interest or skill that you would be happy to share or would you like to learn and enjoy an activity? Or perhaps you are looking for new friends to safely meet and socialise. Dukeries u3a has a varied calendar of activities and interests, and there is always room for new subjects in their programme. You can join at any time in the year. If you would like to sample what Dukeries u3a has to offer, you can attend up to two monthly or activity group meetings for a nominal sum of £1.00 each time.

Members have access to all activity / interest groups, social activities and the monthly members’ meetings, where a visiting speaker talks on a matter of interest followed by refreshments. Members also receive a monthly newsletter and can join the private Facebook group. They can also apply to join an activity group run by other local u3as who participate in the North Notts Network Group.

Dukeries u3a members follow the u3a motto ‘Learn, Laugh, Live’ and believe that ‘Now is the time to make the most of your life’. They now have 140 members drawn from Ollerton, Edwinstowe and surrounding villages. A get-together event is planned soon for new members to come and meet the committee and each other to find out more about Dukeries u3a.
