Everybody is welcome to come along to events organised by The Friends of Thynghowe to share the stories of Sherwood’s Viking heritage. On Saturday 27th April they will be holding their annual perambulation when they will visit archaeological features along a route through the woodlands leading to Sherwood Forest’s Viking Age assembly site where they will revive ancient customs on the hill of Thynghowe. They will meet at 10.00am at the Warsop Windmill forest barrier off the A6075 (go to www.fotevents.wordpress.com for a map).
The walk will be around four miles and will take about four hours. There will be parking inside the barrier but it will be locked from 10.00am. Bring a drink and something to eat. There may be some muddy sections along the paths and a few short sections through the woodlands so wear appropriate footwear.
Two weeks later, over the weekend of 11th and 12th May, the brilliant re-enactors of Regia Anglorum return to Sherwood Pines with their living history camp and superb warrior displays in the arena. You can experience life in Sherwood during the Viking Age by talking to the experts as they demonstrate their skills then witness the violent battles each afternoon.
This is a free event although standard Forestry Commission parking charges apply. The Spring Thing is organised by the Forestry Commission, Regia Anglorum and The Friends of Thynghowe.
