A zumbathon had people jumping with joy for a good cause. The annual event, held at Worksop Leisure Centre in the lead up to Christmas, is organised by fitness instructor Linda Civitillo. This year’s Zumbathon saw participants of all ages take on a two-hour Zumba workout session. The dance fitness class saw them get their groove on for the sixth year running, with all money raised from sponsorship and a raffle going directly to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice charity. This year’s event has made more than £500, with more donations still to be collected.
Linda, who has worked as an instructor at the centre for more than 14 years, said they decided to raise the money for Bluebell Wood because it was a cause all the members and herself could easily get behind.
“We have a lot of fun raising money for an extremely good cause,” Linda said. “We encourage people to dress up if they want to, in fancy dress or just in bright colours, and this year invited some children along who were right at the front getting involved.
“When we first talked about it six years ago, Bluebell Wood was a charity everyone immediately said yes to. And we have continued to keep raising money every year. Barnsley Premier Leisure support us by setting up a stage, setting up the balloons and banners and anything else we might need, and help us with providing a raffle prize too. They are a charity themselves so can’t help us financially, but they definitely help us with material goods.”
Linda said the enthusiasm for the cause pushes people through the gruelling Zumbathon.
“There is absolutely a feel-good factor and the music is so diverse, with everything from pop, to reggae, to salsa, that everyone is keen to keep on going and see what comes next. There is a fantastic atmosphere and best of all, it is all for charity,” she added.
Melanie Rose, Community Fundraiser from Bluebell Wood has nothing but praise for Linda and all those who took part.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Linda and her Zumba crew for putting together another fantastic event. Their support over the last few years has been brilliant. It was great seeing them all in action last year. Every penny raised will help families across our area to make special memories, whether they have days, months or years left together.”
