2021 turned out to be quite the rollercoaster ride for Worksop Wonders WI, and 2022 will see a new start in many ways, with a new meeting venue along with the group’s 10th birthday.

Last year they managed successfully to adapt to the challenges imposed by the pandemic. Zoom became a new word in their vocabulary and online meetings and activities became the norm! When they could meet outdoors in May, they formed a walking group that was greatly enjoyed.

In September, the group was able to restart monthly face-to-face meetings; socialising again proved to be a massive boost to members’ morale. Membership increased significantly in autumn and the group starts 2022 with high hopes for the future!

They have supported the activities of other local charities during the year:

  • In May, they joined in with Mind Worksop and their Miles for May campaign.
  • At monthly meetings, recyclable items are collected and taken to WebaWaste to be recycled.
  • One of the present national WI campaigns includes highlighting the abuse of women. With this in mind, the group decided to make Christmas gift bags for the use of those in need via Worksop’s Women’s Aid group.
  • Members have also generously supported the local Bassetlaw Food Bank.

At their next meeting, on Wednesday 12th January, Worksop Wonders WI will be celebrating their 10th birthday at a new meeting venue: Thievesdale Community Centre, Thievesdale Close, Worksop. Annie Farringdon will be joining again for a celebration and will be performing a Country and Western-themed evening.

Most monthly meetings have a guest speaker who covers a vast array of topics, so it makes each meeting different. Subgroups, including a monthly craft club and a newly formed book club, are available to all members. Members can also join in many events at both county and national levels of the Women’s Institute.

New members are welcome; your first two meetings are free of charge, allowing you to go along and see what the group is about with no commitment.

Monthly meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month (except August).
