The Worksop Society of Artists (WSA) held their annual Summer Exhibition during the first week in August. Well over a hundred new, original framed pieces of artwork were on display, together with many unframed works, hand-crafted items including pottery, macramé, decorated clocks, felting work, small clay painted models and a wide variety of greetings cards.
Every year the Society chooses a worthwhile charity to support. This year, Bassetlaw Hospice in Retford was selected, and two of its fundraising representatives, Debbie Rawlings and Bonney Baggaley, were invited to open the exhibition. They gave an insight into the excellent service the hospice provides for patients, families and carers, and explained their reliance on fundraising and the generosity of the public. They also revealed that NHS funding will shortly cease and the hospice will become completely independent.
A raffle during the exhibition raised £400 for the hospice. The first prize, an original framed watercolour by the late Norman Evans, a former WSA member, was kindly donated by his family. Visitors also enjoyed a display of paintings by pupils of Sparken Academy, which attracted many positive comments about the children’s talent. The Society also runs Saturday workshops throughout the year, giving members and guests the chance to produce paintings and craftwork. These sessions are led by professional artists or occasionally by members themselves. Some of the work produced was displayed across tables in the exhibition hall. Visitors were asked to vote for their favourite framed painting in the ‘Visitors’ Choice’ competition, with two paintings selected: Mill Pond at Cromford and Newlands Pass (1).
The Worksop Society of Artists meets every Monday at Worksop Cricket Club, where members can drop in between 10.00am and 4.00pm to work and socialise. Each month there is also a demonstration from a professional artist to inspire members to develop their techniques or try new media. Artists of all abilities are welcome to go along for a chat and to see how the Society runs.
The next demonstration will be on Monday 20th October, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at Worksop Cricket Club. Sheree Osbourne will demonstrate needle felting. Non-members are welcome, with a £4.00 entry fee payable on the door. Refreshments will be available at the interval.
