Every Monday the Worksop Contract Bridge Club meets for a game of the world’s most widely recognised card game, Duplicate Bridge, as it has done for many decades.
To play the game properly an even number of at least eight players is required. Frequently now there is a shortage of players and the session has to be cancelled. Before 2020 there were 38 members and never too few in attendance.
Then came the game-changing lockdown, which isolated everyone in their homes. Online Bridge games were invented and became popular. The real, friendly, social game was being usurped by the more convenient online form so that when lockdown was lifted many members decided that playing from home was the better option rather than driving to the club to sit and play amongst actual people.
It was a sad, poor show at this year’s Christmas Party as members raised a toast to ‘Absent Friends’. The Club, which still retains a fair holding of financial reserves, now welcomes new members with free membership and free lessons, and warmly welcomes all comers. Experience of the game of Whist and associated games like Solo is a big advantage, but not essential.
