Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society’s (WALHS’) first meeting of 2022 in January took place in the afternoon instead of the evening at their new venue: Poplars Church, formerly known as The Golden Ball on Victoria Square Worksop.
The subject of the meeting was Olde Worksop (which is always popular) and was extremely well attended, which shows that there is a great deal of interest in our town and area. Malcolm Dolby showed many photographs of old buildings and streets in and around Worksop which are no longer there or have changed completely. Most of these came from the collection of late President Michael Jackson, who kept albums and notebooks of everything of interest in the town over many years.
This collection will eventually be given to Worksop Library so that it can be kept safely and be available to interested parties in due course.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday 24th March at the same venue, but in the evening at 7.30pm. There is adequate parking behind the building if required and tea and coffee will be available. The subject will be the ‘History of the Worksop and Retford Brewery’ and the speaker will be John Stocks. Worksop is still littered with the remains or ruins of the many maltings in our area for which the town was known.
Topics for future meetings will include ‘Toys from Granny’s Attic’ in April (David Dawson) and ‘Archaeological Excavations at Raymoth Lane’ in May (Sam Glaswell).
Meetings are quite informal and visitors or new members are all welcome. Membership only costs £6.00 for the year and each meeting costs £2.00, while visitors would pay £3.00. Meetings usually take place on the fourth Thursday of the month, 2.30pm for December to February and 7.30pm from March.
