There was no meeting of the Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society (WALHS) in December and the last meeting in January took place in the afternoon instead of the evening at a new venue, Poplars Church (formerly known as The Golden Ball) on Victoria Square, Worksop. The subject of the meeting was Olde Worksop, which is always popular, interspersed with members own recollections of the town.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday 24th February at 2.30pm, venue as above. There is adequate parking behind the building if required. Chairman Malcolm Dolby will be giving a talk about Street Furniture. Our heritage is all around us, if we care to look – look up, down and around and we can see survivals from the past. Some are where they have always been, now obsolete, never removed – but others have found a new home in all sorts of places, preserved for the future. This illustrated talk gives a flavour of what can be found at urban and rural sites around the country. Armed with his camera, Malcolm has captured a wide range of heritage features visible on or from roads and streets, some local but others on forays further afield.
This is a light-hearted talk open to all – please go along to see what WALHS is about! The Society was started in 1958 and has met regularly for over 60 years, and they hope to be going for a long time yet as history is constantly being made and new interpretations and discoveries evolve.
The meetings are quite informal and visitors or new members are always welcome. Membership costs only £6.00 for the year and each meeting costs £2.00 for members or £3.00 for visitors. Meetings usually take place on the fourth Thursday of the month, 2.30pm for months December to February and evenings at 7.30pm from March.
