Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society members enjoyed the meeting on 26th January when Malcolm Dolby brought along three boxes of ‘ephemera’ collected by Richard Allsopp and previous members of the Society.
Nobody knew what would be discovered, but the items included old football programmes for Worksop Town, old amateur dramatic and cinema programmes, sales brochures of properties in Worksop, maps, advertisements and photos from times past and many other items.
Everyone was able to contribute some personal memories of such things and confirm where some places and companies had been in the past. There remains one box still unopened!
The 23rd February meeting will be at 2.30pm, addressed by Ruthie Boys from the Aurora Wellbeing Centre which, although being mainly for support and information for cancer sufferers, has now expanded to take over some of the exhibits formerly found in the museum at the same building. It is now an excellent centre for various exercise classes, a café, charity shop and much more.
The March meeting, also on 23rd, will be held at 7.30pm when Richard Allsopp will give a presentation on old Worksop including (among other things) a selection of old transport images from his collection.
Meetings take place on the fourth Thursday of the month at The Poplars Church (old Golden Ball). New members and visitors who are interested in local history are always welcome, paying just £3.00.
Membership is £6.00 per year with £2.00 per visit. Car parking is available at the rear of the venue.
