Wednesday Memory Group – Keeping everything going!

by | 19 April 2024 | Support Group, Worksop

It certainly seems to be the case that as we get older everything starts to slow up.

We‘re not as steady on our feet or we don’t get around as quickly as we used to; trying to adapt a recipe by solving a simple maths problem takes too long and as for maintaining a social life and being able to play a full part in conversation with a group of friends – well, it never used to be a problem but now, just as you’ve thought what you want to say, the conversation’s moved on to another topic.

It happens gradually and makes people even more reluctant to do anything when they realise what is happening to them.

Happily, there is help at hand. Wednesday Group members find the friendly support of other members and volunteers just what is needed. A range of activities is on offer to help everyone keep all their skills, social and physical, up to scratch.

Opening time was extended to give member more time to chat over a cuppa before the programme starts. Bingo, cards, dominoes, craft work, quiz, chair dance, chair exercises all help to keep body and mind alert. And then, there’s the music! It’s an absolute certainty that Jessica Brett or the Retford Ukulele Group, both regulars, will have everyone singing along and those who can, up on their feet dancing. That’s the way to do it!

If you care for someone with dementia or you yourself have a diagnosis, or you just want to know more and you think the Wednesday Group might be helpful, do get in touch.
