Wednesday (Memory) Group

The Wednesday Group is a social group for people with dementia, carers, and former carers.

The group has been offering informal support for people affected by dementia for well over 10 years. The main aim of the group is to ensure that those whose lives are touched by this most awful disease are able to have fun, socialise, enjoy a range of activities, and simply be treated as normal, human beings.

Sessions usually start with tea, biscuits, and an opportunity to talk and catch up with other members. Bingo, a quiz, and a chair dance session follow. A two-course lunch is served around 1.00pm, and for the last hour of the afternoon, there is live music. Members usually dance or sing along to any of the seven musicians or groups that visit regularly.

Once a fortnight, when Frank brings his keyboard, members may play cards, dominoes, chess, or do craft work. There’s also boccia and various other group games on offer. What members decide to do is very much a matter of individual choice and which musician is visiting that day. The aim is to offer a range of choices in the hope that everyone will find something they really enjoy.

If you care for someone with dementia, have a diagnosis yourself, or think the Wednesday Group might be helpful, do get in touch. Contact Jan on 01777 709974 or 07969 180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com for the latest on what the group is doing and current availability. Unfortunately, there is a short waiting list at present, but it’s worth contacting the group as you never know when a vacancy might arise. It’s £10.00 per session, which includes lunch, and your first visit is free!
