Roma Memorial Day

Enjoy a new musical dramatization, ‘Broken Instruments’. It is a play about how the power of music can bring people together, give them a sense of purpose and help them survive unimaginable cruelty. The story follows Ari, a young violinist, and his surprise meeting of a Romani music troupe and subsequently how their lives interact within the Holocaust. Join the centre for an exclusive montage and workshop with the scriptwriter, William Varnham, and one of the composers, Phil Baggaley.
Newark Book Festival Pop Up Event
Wednesday 17th August
10.00am to 12.00pm: with British-Asian poet and writer Sunita Thind
A fabulous writing workshop exploring family, identity and community. Sunita writes extensively on the joys and challenges of living between two cultures, British and Punjabi. The workshop will give you a chance to explore your creativity, express yourself in a safe and welcoming environment and reflect on what family, identity and community means to you. Suitable for all ages and abilities.
1.00pm to 3.00pm: with author, presenter and clothes historian Lucy Adlington
A fascinating talk by author Lucy Adlington. Her best-selling book ‘The Dressmakers of Auschwitz’ is the extraordinary true story of Jewish prisoners who sewed for the camp commandant’s wife in an elite fashion salon. Lucy will be talking about the book, her research and the ways in which friendship and resilience triumph even in the darkest of places.
Writers Workshop
Tuesday 23rd August
1.00pm to 3.00pm: with poet, performer and educator Leanne Moden
A photograph is worth a thousand words, so let’s explore those words together. In this special creative writing workshop, you’ll be using photographs, artwork and images as inspiration for writing. Exploring photographs from the museum, as well as images from other sources, you’ll have a chance to explore your creativity, and express yourself in a safe and welcoming environment. This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities.
