The Arts Society Dukeries meets on the first Wednesday of most months for a lecture on a specific art topic and they have exciting lectures planned for their 2025 programme.

As well as these social gatherings / lectures and extra Study / Special Interest Days, members can enjoy a holiday with the Society, and trips to local events and theatres, including a Gilbert and Sullivan production at Buxton Opera House. Members also receive newsletters and a national magazine.

The Society does not meet in January, but will meet again on Wednesday 5th February, which includes their AGM starting at 10.30am before the lecture at 11.00am. Visitors are still welcome.

This lecture sees Anthony Penrose present ‘The Legendary Lee Miller’ and informs of the life of Lee Miller, told with reference to those with whom she exchanged creative inspiration – Man Ray, Roland Penrose, Pablo Picasso, David E Sherman, her father, Theodore Miller, and her son Anthony Penrose.

The selection gives a definitive view by her son and biography, which has been claimed for its ability to embrace many different levels of the history of art and photography, social commentary, and emotional connection with the subject. Please note, it contains some images which may be disturbing.

This is followed on 5th March by a musical lecture entitled ‘Like a Rolling Stone – music of the 60s, 1965 to 1969. The speaker is Steve King.

In 1965, British music dominated the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and the Beatles were blazing a trail across the world. However, in America, the civil rights and anti-war movements were gaining momentum influencing a new breed of writers and musicians; electric folk was born, and album sales started to increase exponentially. This is the story of the second half of the sixties featuring the music of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

The Society meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S81 9AP. Tea / coffee is available from 10.00am, with the lecture from 11.00am to 12.00pm approximately, depending on questions. The AGM will start at 10.30am.

There is free car parking. Members pay an annual subscription and visitors are welcome, paying at the door.
