Two friends from Outwood Valley Academy In Worksop have set their sights on an extraordinary challenge: a four week expedition to Borneo in July 2027 with Camps International.
Year 9 students Lucas Edwards and Jaxon Hall will go on this once-in-a-lifetime trip, where they will also experience community development projects, environmental work and wildlife conservation. The boys will immerse themselves in meaningful work while exploring one of the world’s most biodiverse environments and seeing amazing things like orangutans in the wild and sleeping in hammocks deep in the rainforest.
Each student signed up to the expedition is encourage to raise a whopping £5,130 towards the trip, and they’ve already begun their journey with determination. From doing odd jobs at home to selling items on Vinted and eBay—and even giving up birthday and Christmas money.
Their first major fundraising event was at the St John’s Primary School Summer Fayre on 17th June, where they were due to run a stall featuring a soft toy tombola, children’s books and a bake sale of homemade orangutan-shaped cookies.
Beyond fundraising, the boys are also preparing physically and mentally for the expedition. Through their Scouts group, they’ve been planting trees and repairing fences at Walesby Forest Activity Centre, and they will soon undertake a two-night Duke of Edinburgh trek through Sherwood Forest.
Both Lucas and Jaxon are also eager to take on weekend jobs—they’re hoping to secure a distribution round at Worksop Life, but they would welcome any further opportunities from local businesses.
Local businesses are also invited to sponsor the boys, with the chance to have their logos displayed on expedition T-shirts and featured in photos and updates from Borneo.
