Shireoaks and District WI was formed in 1945 and at their March birthday meeting they will be celebrating 78 years by going back to school! Tests will be given in history, maths, geography, science and spelling but don’t worry – it’s primary school level and just for fun! This will be followed by a school dinner of sausage and mash and cornflake tart. Some members may want to put their old PE kit on or pretend to be Headmistress for the day – who knows?
They have a very lively, enthusiastic membership and a varied programme of speakers, topics of interest and projects within the local community to get involved in. The group meet in the Village Hall on the third Thursday of every month at 7.00pm, so if you would like to go along and see what they have to offer you will be most welcome. If you would like to attend the March meeting then please contact them in advance so they can cater for the additional numbers – phone 07817 681778.
As well as monthly meetings, they have a bi-monthly luncheon club and members enjoy a variety of social events. Their major fundraiser of the year is the Shireoaks Duck Race held in June and they are always looking for volunteers to help with this event or anyone who would be interested in having a stall. One of the charities supported last year was the Bassetlaw Food Bank.
