Shireoaks and District WI

With a visit from Baroness Bolsover to explain the intricacies of Afternoon Tea, a talk on the Suffragettes to coincide with International Women’s Day, not to mention outings, lunches and evening meals out and about in the area, it has been a busy start to the year for Shireoaks and District WI.

But it’s now full steam ahead for this year’s annual Shireoaks and District Duck Race on Sunday 23rd June. The event kicks off at 2.00pm and the ducks enter the water at Cinder Hill Bridge at 3.00pm.

Nancy Howe, a stalwart of the WI and President for many years sadly passed away last month, but was the instigator of the duck race back in 1983. The race then was a small affair on the village green with a few plastic ducks being released into the River Ryton and people bringing along chairs and enjoying tea and cake served by the ladies of the WI whilst the ducks meandered downriver.

Now it is a much larger affair, with the Duck Tombola, Splat the Rat, Guess the Time and Name the Duck to entertain everyone as well as an area for the younger ones to play while they wait for the ducks.

The Village Hall hosts local craft stalls and the tearooms are a quiet oasis serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes while waiting for the ducks to reach the end of the race. Duck tickets cost £1.00 and are on sale on the day on the green.

This is a fundraising event involving much hard work from a relatively small group of ladies and their families, who help bring this unique event to the local people of Bassetlaw. There is an overflow car park at Hewett Arms.

The group has a full programme of events lined up for this year and would welcome new members or even visitors who just want to go along and see what’s on offer. They meet in the Village Hall on the third Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.00pm. Their next meeting is on 20th June: Creating a herb planter and making garden related items.
