The Shireoaks Women’s Institute celebrated its 78th birthday in March with a school-themed event. Guests from neighbouring WIs enjoyed dressing up, taking primary-level tests, and savouring a school dinner of sausage and mash, cornflake tart and pink custard. A fun evening saw ‘headmistress’ Mrs. Short sending some ‘pupils’ to sit on the naughty step!
The village’s longstanding fundraising event takes place on Sunday 18th June, starting at 2.00pm. It offers various activities such as stalls, a tombola, and ‘Splat the Rat’. Craft stalls, refreshments, and tea will be available in the village hall.
Ducks will race in the river Ryton at 3.00pm, with the first 12 winning prizes! Duck tickets cost £1.00 each and can be bought in advance from Shireoaks Post Office or The Retreat of the Row, or on the day. Overflow parking is provided at the Old Hall grounds by Leo from Hewett Arms.
Support this important village event, contribute to local charities and the WI. Join the WI for engaging activities like fundraising events, theatre trips, and craft workshops. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7.00pm in the village hall.
On Thursday 15th June, a former Wimbledon umpire will share intriguing Wimbledon anecdotes during the meeting. Attendees can enter into the spirit with strawberries and cream and a glass of Pimms. The event is open to the public, with tickets priced at £6.00 and advanced booking required.
