Riding for Smiles (RfS) is today celebrating after being awarded almost £117,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work offering inclusive and innovative equestrian-based activities to disabled and vulnerable children and young people.

The funding, from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest funder of community activity in the UK, was awarded in October 2021.

RfS, based at Coloured Cob Equestrian Centre in Creswell, works closely with disabled and vulnerable children, young people and adults to offer emotional, physical and mental health support through enjoyable and enriching physical activities.

Through these equestrian activities, RfS provides a calm environment that enables social interaction, reduces anxieties and encourages self-belief.

Dr Geoff Cutts, Chair of the Trustees, Riding for Smiles, said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we can deliver even more equestrian experiences and amazing benefits for the children and young people. School staff tell us how children and young people that take part are undoubtedly calmer, and their growth in confidence and mental wellbeing is measurable and long-lasting.”

RfS has experienced a 300% growth in requests from schools over pre-pandemic levels.
