Retford and District Scottish Country Dance Society

The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, aims to promote Scottish Country Dancing throughout the world. You don’t have to be Scottish to be involved; it is an exciting form of dance with widespread appeal, enjoyed across the world by people of all ages, abilities and levels of fitness.

Retford has its own branch which meets during school term time on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Westhill Community Centre, Cheyne Walk, Ordsall, Retford DN22 7GA, where members dance to recorded music.

The new season starts on Tuesday 5th September, and this will be a taster session for anyone who wishes to try it out. This taster session will be free of charge, as will your first night if you decide to dance regularly.

Not danced before? No problem! You don’t need to have experience and you don’t have to bring a partner; all that’s needed is enthusiasm, comfortable shoes, and a mug for a cup of tea.

Everyone moves around and you will find yourself dancing with many different partners – so it’s a great way to make new friends and boost your social life. The group dances a mixture of Jigs, Reels, and the more sedate Strathspey.

Scottish Country Dancing has lots of added benefits. It can improve confidence and self-esteem and is acknowledged for increasing fitness and stamina. One hour’s dancing can burn up to 300 calories, as well as reduce stress, increase energy, and improve co-ordination and memory.

This small, friendly group welcomes everyone, from newcomers to experienced dancers. Go along and give it a try; the taster session and your first night are free, thereafter £5.00 per session.
