Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust – North Notts Local Group

One of the North Notts Local Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust members, Gary Hobson, leads a free, monthly nature walk, usually round some part of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve.

His April walk began at Chainbridge Lane and made a circle round via Tiln North, looking for passage waders and early summer migrants. The weather was cold but there was a good turnout; as Gary’s unerring ability to find birds is becoming better known!

Lots of birds were seen, highlights being Red-crested Pochard, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Sandpipers, White Wagtails and the first Swift of the year. Plenty of summer migrants including Willow Warbler, Reed Warbler, Cetti’s Warbler, Sedge Warbler, plus Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Chiffchaff and Blackcap. Everyone enjoyed sorting out the bird songs.

Gary said: “I’m sure everyone enjoyed the walk and saw new birds. These walks are aimed at birdwatching and wildlife spotting with a leisurely feel, and within the range of most abilities. The Idle Valley is a wonderful site, very mixed in habitat types, and there are more areas to explore. Every day is different, and each season has different birds. One lady remarked that she had never seen so many birds in a day. Collectively, we saw or heard 58 species.”

Join the next walk, on Wednesday 19th June from 9.00am to 12.00pm at Idle Valley Nature Reserve. Meet at Chainbridge Lane, before walking a loop to Neatholme Pits via Chainbridge Scrape West, looking for Turtle Doves. Walk leader: Gary Hobson, 07464964879 –
