Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust – North Nottinghamshire Local Group

The North Notts Local Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s first summer get-together of 2025 was a guided walk through one hundred acres of private woodland. The weather was glorious, the stillness was intense, and the bluebells lay in broad drifts of deepest blue beneath the trees. The only sounds were birdsong, and the only movement came from brimstone butterflies patrolling the edges of the clearings. Tiny tadpoles swam energetically in the shallows at the pond’s edge, while further out, larger fish lazily stirred the murky depths. It could not have been a more perfect day.

At the end of the walk, members gathered in the shade of the trees for a picnic lunch and a chat about what they had seen: a wide variety of wildflowers – primroses, cowslips, stitchwort, wild garlic – as well as butterflies, bees, hares and numerous other insects and invertebrates.

The North Nottinghamshire Local Group has several more interesting activities under consideration for the summer programme, including more guided walks, canal trips, a visit to the Museum of the Horse, a visit to Doddington Hall and, just possibly… some pond dipping. A visit to a site specialising in native wildflowers is also a strong possibility.
