This month’s talk at the North Notts Local Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the final one in the series, is ‘Charles Darwin’s Finches’ by David Parkin, a renowned expert on birds and avian genetics and one of the group’s most popular speakers. He will discuss how Darwin developed his theory of evolution, which explains much about the diversity of life on Earth and humanity’s place in the process that created it.
David said: “The voyage of HMS Beagle marked the beginning of Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution. It was during this voyage that he found the bones of extinct animals and saw fossil marine molluscs high in the Andes. Then he explored the Galapagos Islands, with its unique fauna of birds, iguanas, and tortoises. The talk will show how these all came together into his theory of evolution by natural selection, presented in Britain to widespread commotion. And yet, it so nearly didn’t happen!”
David has recently returned from one of his SAGA lecturing trips to exotic locations, but no need to travel to the Azores this month – attend the talk at Idle Valley Nature Reserve for a top-class lecture at the bargain price of £3.00!
This talk will take place at the Idle Valley Centre at 7.15pm on Thursday 10th April. All are welcome, and no booking is required. The talk will be preceded by a brief AGM at 7.00pm.
