New prostate cancer support in Bassetlaw

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with one in eight men being diagnosed at some point in their lives. It’s vital that everyone affected by prostate cancer gets the support they need and in Bassetlaw new sessions have been launched with resources dedicated to providing specialist support for people and their families affected. I wanted to talk to somebody who felt the same as me.

Aurora Centre in Worksop has developed a four-week programme designed to help people with a diagnosis come to terms with what is happening and also a one-off support session for partners of people diagnosed with prostate cancer. The sessions started in October and are a source of information and help for men and their families:

  • Partners Support Group — A session for partners of people with prostate cancer to provide practical, emotional and relationship support.
  • Four-week prostate support programme — Information and guidance for people diagnosed with prostate cancer — Friday 26th October (first session)
  • Monthly prostate support group — An ongoing support group that meet every fourth Wednesday of the month.

Debra Fores, Aurora Centre Manager in Worksop, explains: “When people have been diagnosed with cancer, we know that it is good to talk about the way you feel and our four-week programme is a great starting point to help people better understand their feelings and emotions, which can lead to improvements in wellbeing. At Aurora we believe every man should have regular access to a good quality cancer support group, so following the four-week programme our monthly support group is available for men to meet regularly with others affected by the disease.”

What to expect from a support group
The prostate support group at Aurora is an opportunity to meet others who have faced a similar situation and to share experiences, if people wish, in a relaxed, safe and friendly environment. The groups offer emotional and practical support, advice and information, activities and talks from guest speakers and specialists. People can also access support services via the group, including complementary therapies, counselling or other support.
All sessions are free, but booking is advised to secure a place. Call Aurora Centre Worksop on 01909 470985 or email admin@aurorawellbeing.org.uk for information and to book a place.
