When people think of Babworth Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK), they usually think of happy healthy dogs heading off to new homes. But there are four dedicated cat pens where BARK staff are working just as hard to prepare cats, both domestic and feral, often with kittens, for rehoming. Behind the scenes, the team keeps a waiting list of cats needing help, alongside hopeful adopters ready to give them a new home. And right now, that support is needed more than ever before. The UK is facing a cat overpopulation crisis, with increasing numbers of stray and feral cats struggling to survive.
BARK are very mindful of this and every kitten or cat is chipped and neutered before they leave. For kittens this is not standard practise amongst many rescue organisations, but BARK are committed to not adding to the crisis. As we head into spring we also head in to ‘kitten season’. Did you know that cats can breed from just four to six months old? Pregnancy lasts only around nine weeks, a female can have up to five litters a year and one unneutered cat can produce 100+ kittens in her lifetime? If you are an owner of a kitten or cat that hasn’t been neutered, please don’t delay; get them booked into the vets today.
BARK’s trained team feed the cats twice daily (three times for kittens), clean them out each day, and socialise and play with them to prepare them for life with people.
