Historic Churches Day Tour heads to Chesterfield’s ‘wonky’ spire

by | 17 March 2019 | Heritage, Worksop

The ‘wonky’ spire at Chesterfield is one of the most iconic church structures in England, but beneath it is one of the most interesting and historic church interiors in our region with beautiful stained glass and alabaster monuments. Chesterfield is the first stop on the next Pilgrims and Prophets day tour from Worksop on 6th April. During the visit you will also have the choice of an additional trip up the tower itself or to explore the beautiful area around the church before heading off for the next visit to Bolsover Church which is the historic mausoleum of the famous Cavendish family. The visit here will include descending into the crypt to hear about efforts to prevent the church collapsing due to mining subsidence!

After lunch at Bolsover, the tour will conclude with a visit to the delightfully rural church at Cuckney where we will hear about investigations into the history of the Battle of Hatfield and the legendary death of King Edwin of Northumbria.

It all makes for an interesting day out, with lunch included. If you’d like to join the group, please contact Pilgrim and Prophets on 07724 848958 or mail@pilgrimsandprophets.co.uk. Profits go to support their efforts to develop heritage in Bassetlaw.
