Worksop international athlete Emily Race won the English Schools Senior Girls Heptathlon title in Exeter in September. Poor weather conditions were not conducive to high scores with strong headwinds on day one and heavy rain on day two. However, Emily overcame both the competition and conditions to put in a winning performance, scoring 4,910 points over the two days, to win by 121 points.
She showed real determination and an ability to cope with the pressure of competition, heading into day two with just a 15 point lead, after what is typically her strongest day. Emily, who is now studying chemistry at the University of Sheffield, then produced her three best long jumps of the season, with a best of 5.66m. A solid Javelin followed (32.55m in heavy rain) and a well-executed 800m (2m.31s) for a very well-deserved title and an excellent finish to a long and challenging season, which also brought her the English Schools High Jump title back in July.
