The Friends of Woodlands and Coachwood Green are delighted to announce that they have secured funding for a community arts project to create a new centrepiece at the summit of the Woodlands in Shireoaks. The previous viewpoint, installed in July 2013, featured a central oak structure set on a stone plinth depicting the old pit chimney. Sadly, it was destroyed in a deliberate fire, leaving it beyond repair and representing a significant loss to the community and all those involved.

Thanks to support through crowdfunding and additional funders, the group will now deliver a new community project to design and install a replacement centrepiece. This will recognise the past while looking to the future, honouring the area’s mining heritage and celebrating what the Woodlands and Coachwood Green mean to the community today. To keep updated and find out how to get involved, follow Friends of Woodlands and Coachwood Green on Facebook at @friendsofwoodlandsandcoachwoodgreen.

The volunteer group continues to maintain the Woodlands and Coachwood Green for everyone to enjoy. A recent highlight was a surprise visit from Green Watch, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, who kindly helped prune and clear the car park borders. Volunteers will next be building log piles and wildlife havens in preparation for winter.

Anyone with an interest in gardening, DIY, nature, or simply spending time outdoors is welcome to join the group’s monthly task days. Details can be found at http://www.woodlandsandcoachwoodgreen.co.uk/news/volunteer-with-us.
