During September, the Friends of Bassetlaw Museum (FoBM) heard about a Regency Glass Beaker that was coming up for auction in Colchester later that month. The beaker is engraved with the motto ‘May the Free Men of Retford Prosper in their Journey Through Life’. Standing 11.75cm tall, it has the initials WMAS in a panel on the rear with foliate borders, scrolls and swags. An FoBM representative competed in the auction and was able to secure the Beaker for the Museum. It has now returned to Retford and should be on display in the Museum for all to see and admire by the time this article is published.

Also in September, FoBM were pleased to host members of Worksop Wonders Women’s Institute for a private tour of the Museum. Following refreshments, they were shown around the Museum by Derek Taylor before heading off somewhere in Retford for lunch. Group tours are available by arrangement in addition to the monthly public tours on the afternoon of the first Friday of every month. Booking is essential and whilst they are free, a donation of £5.00 to FoBM is recommended. For further information or to book a tour please drop an email to fobm.tours@gmail.com or contact the Museum.

It is anticipated that the ever popular ‘Christmas Crank Up’ will return to the Museum on Saturday 6th December. The date and details of the day are yet to be confirmed but it should be as good and enjoyable as ever. A date for the diary perhaps. If you would like to know more about The Friends and what they do, or would like to join them, please drop them an email to fobm.membership@gmail.com.

Membership application forms can also be found on the home page of the Bassetlaw Museum website.
