Follow his journey from self-employed joiner to overseeing multi-million pound contracts for a company undertaking projects from NAAFI.
‘Bullets, Buildings and Beer’ tells the exploits of a contractor working in war zones and is filed with the suspense, intrigue and humour, as well as being informative and educational with descriptions which transport you there.
All profits from the sale of the book will also be donated to military charities – Terry wants to repay the help and kindnesses shown to him and his team in many instances and hairy situations.
“I was fortunate enough to work on most of the bases in Northern Ireland, and although the ‘troubles’ had somewhat ceased to the odd incident, there were still many dangers with this work and its environment,” said Terry.
“We next took on working in the Balkan states on the military bases. This work was mainly the shop areas and bars that we built for the soldiers. Other countries soon followed and it wasn’t long before I was asked to survey and take a team to the likes of the Falklands, Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, the last two were during the hostilities.
“I kept diaries to some extent for professional purposes and, with lots of goading and encouragement from friends and family, I decided to record a certain amount of information and data to text. This was when I realised that I ought to tell the story in some scale and try to write a book.
“The many pitfalls, the hope, the disappointment, the elation, the worry, the planning, the views, the history, the laughter and the pride are all in here to be appreciated, admired and laughed at.
“I have made many friends during my escapades abroad doing this precarious work, and are still in touch with these friends today, many from these countries. Indeed, I have returned to visit on occasion, where we have regaled and relived our stories.”
