Daneshill Sailing Club Open Day

by | 9 June 2024 | Hobbies, Worksop

As the summer rapidly approaches and we all start thinking about how to spend our weekends, Daneshill Sailing Club is again opening its doors and inviting anyone who has ever thought about getting in a boat to go along and have a go as part of a Royal Yachting Association ‘Discover Sailing’ event.

Daneshill Sailing Club invites you and your family to enjoy a free sailing experience on Sunday 30th June as the club hosts anyone-welcome taster sessions. From 11.00am until 4.00pm the Club’s members and instructors are available to take you out on the water to experience dinghy sailing first hand.

It is recommended to bring a change of clothes just in case, as it is possible you may get a little wet. Booking is not necessary; you may need to wait if it is busy but there is plenty to see and do on the bank.

The club is a RYA Recognised Training Centre and provides sailing courses for both junior and adult members with qualified instructor tuition during the summer, the first course being for junior sailors over the weekends of 20th / 21st and 27th / 28th July.

The club is situated within Daneshill Lakes Nature Reserve, near Retford, between Torworth and Lound. The club sails on the main lake, and although sailing activities began at Daneshill in 1973, the sailing club as it now exists was formed in 1988 to provide the development of outdoor activities for schools in the Retford area.

The lake was originally excavated as part of the amenity development of the nature reserve in the eighties and now has several scenic walks and picnic friendly areas all within easy reach of the lakeside. The site is owned by Nottinghamshire County Council and managed on their behalf by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust who have made great efforts to improve the site in recent years.

The number of visitors to the Nature Reserve continues to increase, especially as it is very close to Idle Valley Nature Reserve which caters for all manner of wildlife enthusiasts.

If you like the idea of a fun hobby in the fresh air in a family orientated club, then go along and give it a go. You might find you are hooked!
