Muddy Fork, Retford’s Gardening for Wellbeing charity, has many reasons to be cheerful. The days are getting longer, temperatures are rising, and the very first snowdrops and winter aconites have brightened the garden, lifting spirits. However, that is not all. An abundance of goodwill and generosity from local individuals and organisations has been truly heartwarming. Donations, both in cash and in kind, have been received, for which Muddy Fork is extremely grateful – it almost feels as though Christmas has come again.
Some of this support was prompted by news of a break-in early in the New Year. Retford Councillor Mike Introna responded with a visit to the garden, bringing donations of both tools and cash, and is raising awareness of the project with other councillors. Another visitor, Heather Wilkinson from the Willows Community Hub in Walesby, brought a donation of £200. A contribution was also received from the local Fibromyalgia group. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all, however, was the delivery of a new wheelbarrow, still in its box, following the appeal on social media after the break-in. To the anonymous donor – if reading this – thank you!
Local businesses have also shown great support. Many provided raffle prizes for the Christmas draw, which became a New Year draw. Now, the Community Champion from the local ASDA has kept the charity supplied with tea and coffee. Argos contributed a £100 voucher, while UGC (Unlimited Ground Care Ltd) provided wood. As the time approaches for planting, Notcutts Dukeries garden centre has not only donated seed potatoes but also generously discounted other purchases.
