Regular readers will have seen earlier articles exploring ways to upgrade Microsoft Windows 10 (and earlier) versions without spending a fortune. Unfortunately, Windows 11 has been designed to require hardware capable of supporting the latest tweaks, and it will only run on PCs and laptops less than three years old. This leaves many users feeling obliged to purchase new systems to move from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Recent editions of Which? magazine have explored alternative options, including ‘best buy’ devices, though these often cost upwards of £400 (at a minimum).

Clarborough and Welham IT Group has been promoting a much more affordable – and powerful – alternative to Microsoft Windows in the form of Ubuntu Linux, which is starting to gain ground against both Microsoft and Apple’s systems. Linux is a free, open-source system that competes with Windows 11 head-on.

This competitive edge will be explored in greater depth by Which? Tech magazine in their June issue, but for a hands-on opportunity, the public is invited to Clarborough Village Hall (DN22 9LN) on Saturday 14th June to explore Ubuntu Linux and the open-source movement on Clarborough and Welham IT Group’s laptops.

Alternatives to Microsoft products have taken on new significance with recent international tariff threats. Ubuntu Linux, a British product of Canonical Ltd – a privately held computer software company based in London and founded by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth in 2004 – is growing in relevance.

Clarborough and Welham IT Group’s session on Saturday 14th June, lasting up to 90 minutes and starting at 1.00pm, will cost just £5.00. As places are limited, booking is essential. To book, please contact Greg on 01777 700918 or email clarboroughwelham@gmail.com.
