Aurora Wellbeing Centre

by | 8 June 2023 | Local Charity, Worksop

Aurora is a cancer charity providing support in the local area for people living with cancer or a long-term health condition. But they’re are not just a cancer charity – they have a variety of support groups, counselling services and recreational activities on offer for the general public too as well as a charity shop and tearooms.

New to Aurora

With the help of Worksop Lions and Nottinghamshire County Council, Aurora have been able to purchase and install three picnic tables on the courtyard area to the rear of the building which looks out over the Canch. They invite you to take your children and feed the ducks or walk the dog and still enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Memorial Gardens whilst having a delicious home cooked meal or light refreshments.

Spotlight on…. Children and Family Therapy Service

It’s been one year since the Aurora’s Children and Family Service launched, and what a year it’s been! Thanks to the fundraising efforts from the local population and Run the Wall, 20 families have been supported through the service with an age range of four to 19.

As part of the service at Aurora, they support children and young people affected by a family cancer diagnosis – offering a safe space for children to express their feelings and receive tailored, age-appropriate support in a child friendly environment.

Initial funding for the family service came from an Aurora client, who was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in 2018. She wanted to protect her children from the pain and stress of her diagnosis and give them coping strategies. At the time there were no services available for children in the local or regional area. She spent the next three years fundraising, hence Run the Wall, to set up the service in order that other families in the locality would not have to face the same fears she had.

Their aim is to ensure this invaluable service remains available in the region. Currently up to 12 1-to-1 therapy sessions are available, facilitated by Aurora’s accredited therapists, who are specialised in supporting children and families using a person-centred therapeutic approach.
