Major Oak Pop Choir

When they’re not busy singing their hearts out, the ladies of the Major Oak Pop Choir apparently have a real flair for stuffing straw and adding a touch of black and bling!

A huge thank-you goes to one of their brilliant members, Linda Howman, who entered the choir into the Edwinstowe village scarecrow competition which had the theme of ‘Inspirational Women of Edwinstowe’. The three fabulous scarecrows celebrated 10 years of the choir, their inspirational musical Director, Pauline Daglish, and the 80-strong ladies who are members. There was plenty of debate about who had the best hair, the most glamorous outfit, and the most realistic singing posture —but in the end, all three looked ready to burst into song! To the choir’s delight, their trio of straw superstars took first place in the Adult Community Group! They’re still not sure whether it was their charm, their creativity, or the fact they managed to stay upright in the wind that clinched it — but they happily took the win.

The ladies of the choir have been busy over the last couple of months preparing for their 2025 Christmas performances, which will see them singing their usual ‘feelgood programme of toe-tapping songs as they contribute to the festivities at the annual Edwinstowe Christmas Lights event, and also as they entertain at their Christmas charity concert in the John Fretwell Centre on Sunday 7th December. As always, they will be raising lots of funds for local charities on the way.

The annual Christmas concert is always a special time for the choir, but this year it will be particularly poignant. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Major Oak Pop Choir, which was founded and directed by Pauline Daglish. Over the past decade, the choir has maintained a membership of 80 talented women and has built an enviable reputation for musical excellence in the local community.

Under Pauline’s leadership, the choir has not only delighted audiences with memorable performances but has also made a significant charitable impact, raising over £85,000 for local causes. “This choir has been the proudest thing I have ever been part of,” said Pauline. “It’s more than just a choir – it’s a family. The friendships, dedication, and laughter we’ve shared over the years have made every moment unforgettable.”

After 10 inspiring years at the helm, Pauline will be stepping down at the end of 2025 to retire and relocate to Northumberland with her husband, Walter. “Leaving something so close to my heart is bittersweet, but I am also filled with excitement at the prospect of living in a place we love,” she said.

“I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to all choir members, past and present, and to everyone who has supported us over the last 10 years. Your energy, commitment, and encouragement have made this journey so special, and I will cherish the memories forever.”

The choir will continue its musical journey in 2026 under the guidance of a new musical director, who has been appointed and will be announced in due course.

The Major Oak Pop Choir is an adult choir, exclusively for ladies and based in Edwinstowe. To find out more about the choir, the charities they have supported, and details of their forthcoming concerts, please find them on Facebook @majoroakpopchoir; alternatively, visit www.majoroakmusic.co.uk.
