Edwinstowe in Bloom

Spring is now evident across Edwinstowe, with the bulbs planted last year beginning to bloom. Work continues on tidying up the planters and flower beds, as well as maintaining the allotment. A resident on Mansfield Road kindly offered Edwinstowe in Bloom (EiB) a large number of snowdrops, which no longer fitted with their future garden redesign. In early March, EiB volunteers relocated them to the churchyard, Linda’s Meadow, and Mansfield Road.

The planter on Mansfield Road, near the cherubs, sustained damage from vehicles cutting the corner. Thanks to repairs by James, the planter has now been relocated further back to prevent future damage from cars driving over the kerb.

A new woodland has been planted with the help of volunteers supporting Chris Parsons and Eakring Farming staff. A call was put out for volunteers to assist with planting a mix of native tree species, each protected by a tube and stake. A total of 3,000 trees were planted, with the final 200 added on the last day of February in warm sunshine. Around 60 people from Eakring, Bilsthorpe, Edwinstowe, Edingley, and Southwell, including five EiB volunteers, participated. In appreciation of their efforts, Eakring Farming is donating approximately £4,500 to good causes suggested by the volunteers.

EiB is planning to run an Open Gardens Weekend in Edwinstowe. The proposed dates are Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June. Anyone living in Edwinstowe who is interested in taking part in 2025 and opening their garden to the public is encouraged to send their details as soon as possible to eib@btinternet.com.

A date for the diary: The National Gardens Scheme is holding an Open Gardens Day in Caunton on Saturday 26th July. The event will once again feature the talented folk band The Jolly Beggars, while Caunton WI will provide teas throughout the day. Last year’s event was a great success, attracting over 500 visitors.

In the photography competition, the winning entry for February was Sunset on Thoresby Forest by Caroline Foster. Submissions are now open for the April 2025 competition, with entries welcomed from amateur photographers over the age of 16. Photographs should be of anything of interest in the Edwinstowe area – not just flowers or landscapes but also events, animals, or anything that captures the essence of Edwinstowe. Entries should be submitted in jpg format, with a title and location, by midnight on the last day of each month.
