Winthrop Gardens is regarded by many as a hidden gem tucked away at the end of Second Lane, off Morthen Road in Wickersley. But we are very pleased to share the secret of this very special place — run by the community for the community. And you are assured of a very warm Winthrop welcome when you visit.

The Gardens and Tea Rooms were taken over by Wickersley Parish Council in February 2016 after they had been closed to the public for two years. A fantastic team of volunteers brought the sensory gardens back to life and much work has been done since to improve and develop them. Spring is nearly here and already the first flowers of the year are appearing — dainty snowdrops and beautiful dwarf cyclamen.

Throughout the winter months (November to March) the Gardens and popular Tea Rooms are open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 11.00am to 3.00pm.

From 1st April they will revert to their extended summer opening of Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays between 10.30am and 4.00pm.

There is much going on in this little gem of a place — all with the aim of raising awareness and interest so that all can enjoy and benefit from this great community facility. Much is planned for this month and the rest of the summer:
A Memory Café will be held on Friday 2nd March (and on the first Friday of every month) from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The café is supported and run by our volunteers and provides a respite for those living with dementia and their carers. Different activities are arranged each month but there will always be a warm and friendly welcome.

Special Vintage Afternoon Teas will be available for mums and other special ladies in our lives on 6th and 8th March — these must be pre-booked though!

Winthrop will mark St Patrick’s Day with an Irish Supper Night on Friday 16th March.
On Saturday 24th March, from 11.00am to 3.00pm, volunteers will ‘Step into Spring’ along with the clocks as they move forward! On that day they will be working in partnership with Marie Curie Cancer Relief Rotherham, to once again stage the popular ‘Winthrop Bake Off’. There will be a range of interesting activities, spring bedding plants on sale and of course, plenty of cake! Wickersley WI will help in the judging of the ‘Bake Off’ once again and full details of how to enter, our categories etc can be found on the Winthrop Gardens Facebook page or obtained by emailing

The Winthrop volunteers are the great strength! All of the work done in the Gardens, Tea Rooms and Curiosity Shop is done by a fantastic team of volunteers. And all the proceeds are ploughed back in to maintaining and developing what Winthrop does!

Winthrop is always keen to welcome new volunteers to their expanding team so that together they can ensure the continuing success of Winthrop. If you’d like to volunteer a few hours once a week, once a fortnight or just once a month, then do please get in contact with Anna Chester on 07397 039226, email or visit them on Facebook @Winthrop-Gardens.
