Thank you

The recent sessions of ‘Soup in Support of Ukraine’ raised a fantastic £1,266 and Winthrop Gardens, working in partnership with Wickersley Parish Council, would like to thank everyone for their support: the Winthrop volunteers who made and served the soup, all the wonderful people who came for their lunch and were so generous in their financial contributions and finally, all those people who made personal and ‘rounding up’ donations to help reach such a fantastic final total.

The money has now been sent to UNHCR (the United Nations High Commission for Refugees) where, thanks to a generous group of donors, all donations will be doubled until they have raised £310,000 – so these fundraising efforts will help twice as many people, which is fantastic.

Jubilee celebrations

Winthrop volunteers, friends and supporters have been working together to create a Platinum Jubilee Recipe Book as a tribute to the Queen’s historic achievement of being the only British monarch to reign for 70 years. In recognition of her Platinum Jubilee there’s a fantastic selection of recipes – personal favourites, and many with ‘royal’ connections!

The Recipe Book was launched at an Open Day event at Winthrop Gardens, Second Lane, Wickersley S66 1EE on Saturday 30th April, where there were lots of tasting opportunities, including the Queen’s favourite chocolate cake, a ‘Patriotic Prize Every Time’, plant sales, specially crafted Platinum Jubilee souvenirs and refreshments.

Pick up your copy of the book now and see if there is a recipe you might want to include in your Jubilee celebrations. The volunteers and friends of Winthrop have been very creative and found a few recipes to tempt you.

Over the extended Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday, Winthrop will be holding a Jubilee Walk and a ‘Vintage Afternoon Tea Fit for a Queen’ (already sold out). At the regular Memory Cafe the focus will be on memories of the Coronation in 1953 – an event which many can remember crowding round one small TV to watch!

On Saturday 4th June there will be an Open Day at Winthrop alongside a ‘Right Royal Bake Off’ – application forms are available from Winthrop for this ‘free to enter’ Bake Off with a category for everyone – young or old(er), experienced or novice. The annual Winthrop Bake Off is always a really enjoyable event – usually held in March but delayed this year to coincide with the Platinum Jubilee to invite some ‘right royal creations.
