Winthrop Gardens is a one-acre Community Gardens at the end of Second Lane, off Morthen Road. In the ownership of Wickersley Parish Council since 2016, the site includes the gardens, plant sales, Curiosity Corner and the tea rooms all run by a team of 50-plus volunteers.
Winthrop is regarded by many as a ‘hidden gem’, but the volunteers are very pleased to share the secret of this very special place — run by the community for the community!
Designed for peace and tranquillity, with an emphasis on colour and scent, the gardens have a number of unusual and rare plants and trees, a fantastic collection of roses and many interesting design features which can be adapted to domestic settings. Spring is here and already the first flowers of the year are appearing — dainty snowdrops and beautiful dwarf cyclamen.
The Winthrop Tea Rooms always has hot snacks, sandwiches and lovely cakes and scones.
The ethos is very much about extending the warmest of welcomes to those who need that extra little bit of friendship and support and Winthrop is proud to be inclusive and accessible to all.
Throughout the winter months (November to March) the gardens and popular tea rooms are open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 11.00am to 3.00pm.
From 1st April, Winthrop moves to summer opening of Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 4.00pm, with occasional Saturday openings for special events.
There is much going on in this little gem of a place — all with the aim of raising awareness and interest so that all can enjoy and benefit from this great community facility.
- Memory Café on Friday 1st March between 12.00pm and 3.00pm. The theme will be ‘All Things Welsh’ to mark St David’s Day. Different activities are arranged each month but there are always refreshments and a warm and friendly welcome. There is no need to book a place and no charge to attend.
