Speaking of Summer Fayres…

Like people, Summer Fayres vary in character and come in all shapes and sizes. At one extreme they are serious, earnest affairs, small in stature but nonetheless capable of packing a punch. Others are jolly, loud, larger-than-life, perhaps more generously proportioned and bristling with ideas and activities.

Just as we have our own ideas about what makes an attractive person, what makes an attractive Fayre is also an individual thing. Let me tell you about the Rotherham U3A Summer Fayre.

When you read that the U3A offers a range of interesting and enjoyable activities for people over the age of 50 and no longer in full time employment, does it conjure an image of ‘old has-beens’, sitting mourning their lost youth? Time to think again.

This Summer Fayre celebrates the energy and creativity of older people and is an invitation to come and join one or more of its lively groups. It displays work from more than a dozen of the 33 groups, with enthusiastic members on hand to answer questions about any group you fancy.

The Art groups and the Embroidery and Upholstery group will show some of their work, as will the Creative Writers, whose long awaited collection of writing will be on sale. Visit the Language displays to reminisce about holidays in France or Italy. Join in French word games, and if you wish, practice your spoken French or Italian.

Look for your roots at the Family History stall, or for more active pursuits, make for displays presented by Gardeners, Strollers, Singers and Dancers. New partners, Rotherham Age UK will also be there to tell you about the wide range of information and services they offer to older people.

Raffle prizes include a hamper of French food and wine; fish and chip supper for two; afternoon tea for two, and many other delights. Tickets at the door cost £1.00 for coffee/tea and cake.

The fun-of–the Fayre begins at 1.00pm on Tuesday 10th July at Silverwood Miners’ Welfare Club, Doncaster Road, Dalton. There is parking at the venue and the Rotherham-Doncaster bus stops opposite the front door.

It’s ‘Make-Your–Mind-Up’ time! If it’s your type of Fayre, we’d love to see you there. For more details see www.u3asites.org.uk/rotherham or call 01709 374841.
