Rotherham u3a – Walk, don’t run!

by | 11 July 2025 | Education and Learning, Hobbies, Rotherham, Sports Club, U3A

Walking Netball was introduced in Scotland in 2017, and since then, it has steadily spread across the UK. Though briefly paused by the pandemic, it regained momentum post-2021 and now boasts over 200 programmes nationwide, with around 37,000 women participating.

This version of netball has adapted rules to suit older or less agile players, making it accessible and inclusive. All that’s needed to take part is a pair of sturdy trainers and loose, comfortable clothing.

The Rotherham u3a Walking Netball team first stepped onto court in 2022. Members soon discovered that this enjoyable, low-impact game not only helps improve muscle tone and strength, but also boosts balance, coordination, and stamina. It’s gentle on the joints, increases flexibility, and enhances reaction times.

As with all physical activity, it supports the release of ‘feel-good’ hormones. Playing in a team adds an extra sense of enjoyment, and even the more competitive games often end in laughter.

Walking Netball is a fun way to meet new people and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. From complete beginners to experienced players, everyone is welcome to join this lively and friendly group.

The Rotherham u3a Walking Netball team meets each Monday from 1.00pm to 2.00pm at St Anne’s Leisure Centre, Rotherham S65 1BL. Those interested are invited to go along and try one or two sessions free of charge to see if it’s the right fit.
