Rotherham Sitwell Rotary Club

August in Rotary is a quiet month due to holidays. It started for Rotherham Sitwell Rotary Club with a council meeting at the president’s house. This was followed by a Treasure Hunt and a meal at the Sitwell Arms.
Later in the month, the president joined Tom Knight and his committee to discuss and prepare a proposal for council regarding Friends of Sitwell Rotary. This is an initiative aimed at attracting supporters to help with the fundraising activities without them necessarily becoming full members (although it would be great if they did).
John Breckin and Les Payne addressed the club on 12th August to talk about John’s life in football. This was a fascinating account of John’s career in the game and what goes on behind the scenes. It generated lots of questions and some nostalgia amongst members. John then signed and sold copies of his book, all profits going to Rotherham Hospice (he’s donated over £6,000 so far.)
The first gardening session at Rotherham Hospice, in conjunction with their mother club Rotherham, went ahead on Tuesday 24th August. Some good progress was made, and they praise John Turner for the offer of the loan of a rotavator, but in the end it was not needed. Gardening will continue at the Hospice every Tuesday at 4.00pm until the end of October. More volunteers are welcome, but they advise people to take their own tools.
Finally, some sad news. Derek Cheetham, one of the club’s long-standing members, sadly passed away on 5th September, with his wife June and their two daughters Rachel and Sarah by his side. Rest in peace Derek.
Some of their forthcoming meetings are as follows:
• Thursday 14th October: Steve Beck talking about ‘Mosaics’
• Saturday 30th October: Charter Night
