On 12th May, Lesley Dabell spoke to Rotherham Sitwell Rotary Club about Age UK Rotherham and the work they’re doing to help older people in the community – particularly those with ‘long Covid’. The Club has subsequently agreed to donate £500 to help in their work.

A few days later and the highlight of the month, if not the year, for President Steve Burns was when his whole family flew to Turkey for his son’s wedding. The weather was fantastic, the hotel was great and everyone enjoyed the occasion.

Sadly, Rotarian Joe Walker died on 9th May. Joe was a lifetime Honorary Rotarian and also a Paul Harris Fellow, in recognition of the work undertaken in Romania and the UK by him and his friend Danny Thompson with their charity People in Need Worldwide.

The funeral took place at Rotherham Crematorium on Tuesday 31st May and, not surprisingly, the building was packed. After the funeral Rotarian Roger Green sent this message to fellow Rotarians:

“We raised £550 for a bench to be situated at Crookstone Barn in memory of our friend Joe. Joe’s son Marc and his wife Margaret are so pleased and touched with what we are doing. Marc told me Joe was in the process of making a bench in memory of Tony Taylor, the President of Crookstone, who has recently passed and that just about sums Joe up.

“After the thousands of things Joe did for everyone else I feel so privileged we can do this for him. From the bottom of my heart thank you so much for your kindness.”
