The Rotherham Choral Society will be performing their concert on Saturday 9th April at 7.30pm at Herringthorpe United Reformed Church, Wickersley Road, Rotherham. It will be conducted by Musical Director Rachel Copley. Tickets cost £10.00 and can be obtained from choir members, on the door or from Liz Hacon on 01709 814654.
The concert programme will consist of two works. Firstly, ‘Magnificat’ by Bach. This was first performed on Christmas Day 1723 for the people of Leipzig, conducted by Bach himself who wanted to perform something ‘short, sharp and stunning’ as a change from long and less interesting religious music.
The other work is ‘Olivet to Calvary’ composed by Maunder, who lived from 1858 to 1920. This is a sacred and very emotive cantata depicting the last days of Jesus’ life on Earth.
The soloists for this concert are Fae Evelyn (soprano), Angela Hartley (contralto), Christopher Why (tenor) and Thomas Asher (bass).
