Rosie’s family launch Light up a Life appeal

A Rotherham couple helped by a charity during the toughest times of their lives have helped launch its ‘Light up a Life’ appeal for Christmas. Joanne and Jonathan Tennick are asking people to dedicate a snowflake to the memory of a loved one and help families supported by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The Thurcroft couple came to Bluebell Wood in 2015 after their one-day-old baby Rosie had passed away, giving them precious moments that they will treasure forever. The family stayed for ten days in an end of life suite, giving them time together to say their goodbyes.

During Joanne’s pregnancy, the couple had been given the devastating news their baby had a type of fatal brittle bone disease. Joanne said: “When she was born, Rosie did really well at first. She was clearly such a fighter and was alert, looking up at us all of the time. She was beautiful.

“Bluebell Wood is such a lovely and special place. Being here gave us chance to have time with Rosie that we thought we would never have. We could see her whenever we wanted, our family and friends could visit to say their goodbyes with no visiting hours in place and we had beautiful moulds of Rosie’s feet created. Amazing memories.”
Bluebell Wood also offers support for siblings. So, throughout the ten-day stay, Rosie’s two-year-old sister Pippa had fun in Bluebell Wood’s gardens and spent time doing many activities, including making crafts with the care team.
Joanne said: “The weather was lovely when we stayed at Bluebell Wood, so Pippa really enjoyed being outside. Being here together meant Jonathan and I had time to grieve while knowing Pippa was in safe hands and having fun.
“Each person who buys a snowflake in this year’s Light up a Life appeal will be helping to make a difference to families who need Bluebell Wood in the future. These donations mean families like ours won’t have to go through such a difficult time alone.”

Everyone buying a snowflake at www.bluebellwood.org/light2018 will be able to see his or her twinkling snowflake in a virtual sky, and receive a special limited edition glittering purple snowflake decoration to hang on their Christmas tree.
All money raised will help children and young adults with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions, and their families, across North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. Bluebell Wood’s doors are open 365 days a year, from the heat of the summer to the snow in the winter.
